Diplomatic blunders to avoid at all costs

Chileans will rarely be caught indulging in Chile-bashing. They are extremely proud of their country. But they also have an acute sense of humour and say the best way for a foreigner to be viewed as a philistine regarding Chile and Chileans is to commit four major and unforgivable "diplomatic blunders". Easter Island or the appeal of the never-never land

Why do the gigantic statues, or Moaï, which dot the island capture the imagination ? No doubt because they are remnants of a lost civilization of which we know virtually nothing.

Chiloe, the strange island

Sitting on the terrace of a "palafito", one of numerous houses on stilts that dot the island of Chiloe, an Argentine woman in her sixties sips a fizzy drink while contemplating the painted facades of the frame houses reflecting in the water. "I come from Buenos Aires", she says. "But I have lived in Chiloe for several years. Between the two, I have no hesitation. I prefer Chiloe". more

The Maipo Canyon, near Santiago, is the right place for you, if you hate the crowds, big buildings and thousands of small houses packed together

The region offers a lot of sporting activities such as horseback riding, hiking, rafting and skiing in the winter. The ski slopes of Lagunillas are only 15 minutes away. With temperatures ranging from 30c (day) to 19c (night) in the summer, the weather is very pleasant: warm in the summer during the day (30 C) , it cools down in the evening (19 C). During winter (from June to August), it can snow but the temperature rarely goes below 0° (32°F).

Globalization has had important consequences over real estate values.

Before the internet interrupted our world, it ws possible to evaluate a property, by taking into consideration only the very local environment. But now it would be judged unrealistic. The value of a property will depend more and more on real estate policies in the globalised world. Some real estate developers continue to sell high rise buildings at the sea side, with thousands of units, and its negative consequences over the environment. The negative image of this type of construction will grow and grow in the next decade. What does it mean? It means for the investor that properties in massive construction sectors will lose their values within next few years. Just look at the Spanish coast which has been almost entirely destroyed by unplanned urbanisation, and where property prices are dropping. The same phenomenon will occur in South America

Chile occupies the 20th place among the most attractive countries to do business within the 82 best economies in the world.

Chile is one of the best places in the world to buy real estate. The country has a solid financial system, low inflation, low debt in relation to the Internal Gross Product (4,1 % of the GDP), a healthy budgetary surplus (4,7 % of the GDP), stable change and almost no political risk. Chile's Codelco is the first world's top copper producer.

The time is gone, where you could buy real estate in nearly every part of the world. The days are gone when Africa, Asia, and the Middle East were a small paradise.

Which are now the criteria to look for a «home abroad»?Avoid any country where ethnic or religious communities clash together. Choose a country where you reasonably think that you will be able to mix with the local population. Buy real estate in countries where you’ll find everything you need to live in the modern world. Compare what is comparable in quality and environment. A house in Valparaiso on the Chilean central coast, even with a marvellous sea view, will never have the same value, as a flat at Vieira Souto Avenue, in the Ipanema district of Rio de Janeiro, or a penthouse in the 6th district (arrondissement) in Paris Patagonia may be very «chic» since everybody claims to be an environmentalist, but do not buy a house there if you like warm sea water!

Countless fake information is circulating on the net.

Some are so well written and presented, that even professionals like the Press spend a lot of time checking their reliability. Does it mean, it is not worth to surf the net, to get an idea about real estate investment? Of course not! But do it with discrimination. The most dangerous manipulation of information is not to publish lies, like saying that Greenland is an ultimate destination for beach lovers, but to give only one part of the picture. What to do then? One good method is to look on the net for media whose reliability has been proven. Information published by the International News Agencies, serious newspapers like el Pais, or the Sydney Morning Herald are checked by the editors before been put on the web, so you’ll have a reasonably good chance of getting an accurate report by reading these sort of media. There are in the world a few dozen newspapers and magazines which are reliable sources. So grab the info and make your mind up with these professionals, but be cautious with all the rest.
